i
am an improvising musician, artist and activist of various stripes living
in
seattle, washington, usa. my principal instrument is the alto
saxophone.
in
my music i emphasize texture, chance and
exploration. i try to avoid music that communicates primarily
by
referencing preexisting structures of meaning (forms, hooks, progressions, gestures, quotes, etc.).
at the same time, i'm not interested in creating 'new music'
in the the sense of overcoming history or proving that
i'm unique.
to
me, the obsession with creating unique art is horribly misinformed by
capitalism and other hierarchies. how is 'new music'
fundamentally different from the new Ford or the new dishwasher on the
market? rather than something new or unique, i search for
something personal, and something that communicates what i need to get
across.
i am interested in the actualization through art of
feminist and
libertarian ethics, the interplay between artistic freedom
and freedom at large. i see improvisation as a model
of
interaction that can inform diverse situations and relationships.
i
currently perform solo, as well as with the Gust Burns Quartet,
'A Saxophone Quartet' (with Paul Hoskin, Kelvin Pittman and Tyler
Wilcox), bst.cr (with Ben Bennett and Ryan Jewell) and in various ad
hoc and piece-oriented collaborations.
some musicians i have collaborated with: Gust Burns, Carol Genetti, Bonnie
Jones, Jack Wright, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Bob Marsh, Nate Wooley, Gino
Robair, Tyler Wilcox, Greg Kelley, Jaimie Branch, Jacob Wick, Jonathan
Zorn, Mark Collins, Teri Nelson-Zagar, Dave Knott, and many others....
i am also the director of gallery
1412
and part of the Seattle
Improvised Music board of directors.

...formed
initially in the summer of 2009, this heretofore unnamed vessel
comprises a core trio of Ben Bennett, Ryan Jewell and Wilson Shook, as
well as any foolhardy stowaway who happen to seek passage under these
ragged sails.
whether
careening through uncharted seas or reposing under familiar stars,
bst.cr follow a map of their own creation, where X marks not a terminus
of promised riches, but a signpost along the way of perpetual becoming.
fellow travelers are advised to set aside their customary defenses and
take up the banner of an alter-subjectivity.

Wilson/Phillips is the collaborative
research of one Wilson M. Shook, of Seattle, Washington, and one Chris
P. Phillips, of Vashon Island, Washington.
Their music investigates
the incomplete cipher, the broken record, and the contents of your
garbage can. New resonant possibilities arise from dusty
miscellania, while generally well-regarded instruments such as the
guitar and alto saxophone are made to sound like a box of
busted canopeners.
Their findings are completely unsubstantiated.
chris phillips
- bass guitar, acoustic guitar, zither, assorted crap.
wilson
shook
- alto saxophone, lamphorn (francophone), voice, junk, etc.

activist and revolutionary topics, and whatever else resonates.

Others
TBA
brings together the creative energies of Matthew McDowell
and Wilson Shook.
Stripped
down to a
minimal setup of alto sax, casio keyboard and voice, Others TBA build
their sound from the ground up, reimagining the possibilities of their
respective instruments via nontraditional human and machine
technologies.
